Korea is King of Wireless Broadband, But Japan Leads in Mobile Subscriptions

japan mobile

The OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development) recently released a bunch of broadband-related statistics, and this includes some interesting mobile wireless broadband subscription data.

According to their figures which are dated to December 2011, Korea is king of wireless broadband as the only country among OECD countries to break 100 percent penetration with 100.6 subscriptions per 100 inhabitants. Sweden is the only country that really comes close, sitting just behind in second spot at 98 subscriptions per 100 inhabitants. These totals include both standard mobile subscriptions and dedicated data subscriptions which are purchased separately from voice [1].

It should be pointed out however that when it comes to just standard mobile subscriptions (see light blue in interactive chart below), Japan in the leader by far with 82.4 subscriptions per 100 inhabitants.

  1. A word about the OECD’s terminology here:

    • Standard mobile subscriptions: “Includes mobile subscriptions which advertise data speeds of 256 kbit/s or greater and which have been used to make an Internet data connection via IP in the previous 3 months.”
    • Dedicated data subscriptions: “Subscriptions to dedicated data services over a mobile network which are purchased separately from voice services either as a stand-alone service (modem/dongle) or as an add-on data package to voice services which requires an additional
      subscription.”
