Nvidia to back OpenAI Ohio data center with $1.5b

Nvidia said on Aug. 17 that it will provide credit support and compute capacity for an OpenAI data center in Ohio, supporting an initial 4.25 gigawatts of capacity, with an option for another 3.75 gigawatts.

The capacity is expected to come online in phases starting in 2028.

SB Energy, a US-based energy infrastructure company backed by SoftBank, will build and manage the site at the PORTS-Pike Technology Campus in Piketon, Ohio, under a 20-year lease to OpenAI.

Nvidia will invest US$1.5 billion in SB Energy, which said it has raised more than US$19 billion in project capital and has an about 5-gigawatt operating and under-construction power portfolio.

The Ohio project is part of OpenAI’s broader Stargate US computing expansion.

The announcement also fits Nvidia’s broader effort to support US$500 billion in AI infrastructure with financial partners.
