Nvidia denies China-specific AI chip on roadmap
Nvidia denied on August 20 a report that it planned to ship a China-focused AI chip by year-end.
A spokesperson said Nvidia has no language processing unit sales in China and no China-specific LPU on its roadmap.
Two Nvidia employees said the company planned small-batch shipments by the end of the year.
They said the chip would comply with US export-control rules and work with processors available in China.
The denial follows a March report that Nvidia was preparing a China-compatible version of AI chips for inference, or running AI models to generate responses.
Chief executive Jensen Huang said in May that Nvidia had “largely conceded” China’s AI chip market to Huawei Technologies.
Washington in May also approved sales of Nvidia’s H200 AI chips to a limited group of Chinese companies, including Alibaba, Tencent, and ByteDance, though deliveries began only recently.
