Nvidia-backed AI firm Vast Data raises $1b at $30b valuation

Vast Data said it raised US$1 billion in a series F funding round, valuing the company at US$30 billion.

The round was led by Drive Capital and Access Industries, with participation from Nvidia, Fidelity Management and Research Company, and NEA.

The round included primary and secondary capital and more than tripled Vast’s US$9.1 billion valuation from its 2023 fundraise.

Founded in 2016, the company sells software for managing large data workloads used in AI systems and counts CoreWeave, Mistral, the US Air Force, and Cursor as customers.

Separately, Dealroom said AI startups have raised US$280.5 billion globally this year.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Vast’s valuation rests on its move from storage to a wider AI software stack

  • Vast’s higher valuation comes from moving beyond high-performance storage and pitching itself as an “AI Operating System” provider 1.
  • The platform puts storage with database-like indexing plus event triggers, streaming, and agent execution in one software layer 1. Vectors are a way to organize data for AI search and retrieval 1. It runs on its Disaggregated and Shared Everything (DASE) architecture, a design that lets many computers use the same pool of data efficiently 1.
  • That shift widens Vast’s target market from about US$10 billion in premium flash storage to what the company calls a US$15 trillion AI-era opportunity 1.
  • Revenue adds support, with annual recurring revenue (ARR) at about US$200 million in January 2025 and a company projection of US$600 million in ARR by 2026 2.

Vast’s integrated platform could pressure specialist AI infrastructure vendors

  • Vast combines storage with vector indexing, search, plus an agent-execution framework. That goes after the industry’s “best-of-breed” model, where enterprises buy separate pieces from different vendors 1.
  • This approach could pressure storage vendors such as NetApp and Pure Storage, along with Amazon’s FSx offerings, a managed file-storage service from Amazon Web Services 1.
  • For large enterprises, Vast presents the package as an “AI factory in a box” that cuts the complexity of multi-vendor stacks 1.
  • Partnerships, including co-development on products such as InsightEngine with Nvidia, suggest some ecosystem players view this integrated model as workable for AI infrastructure 3.
