No… IndoGroupon isn’t Groupon Indonesia

An Indonesian friend of mine told me about IndoGroupon.com. Could it be Groupon Indonesia? That was the first question that came to mind. I logged on to the site and saw a familiar Groupon design with cheesy photos. No, that can’t be Groupon.

Who knows? IndoGroupon might turn out to be a good idea since Groupon hasn’t established itself in Indonesia. Logging on to groupon.co.id, leads you to Groupon Singapore instead. It’s a good idea only if IndoGroupon can be the market leader in Indonesia. The name does sound apt for Groupon but it would be an uphill battle fighting against other clones that had head start in the market. As long as Groupon holds the country domain suffix, it would be hard to “blackmail” the daily deal giant. Other prominent daily group deal site in Indonesia includes Disdus, Dealkeren and Lapar.

The story in China is different, though. The domain Groupon.cn is snapped up by a Chinese clone which forced Groupon to launch Groupon China through Gaopeng.com. The Groupon China site is now live but business has yet to start. Users, however, can log on to the site and register your interest for up to 70 percent discount.
