Gold Plated Smartphone, Nokia Oro Trending On Twitter India

nokia-ero

Today, @Nokia tweeted about Nokia Oro, a new smartphone that is made of 18-carat gold plating, a sapphire crystal and leather from one of Scotland’s finest Caledonian herds.

That apparently caught India’s attention as ‘Nokia Oro’ is now trending on Twitter at the point of writing. It didn’t come as a surprise considering India is the second top gold buyer in the world. Interestingly, China has recently overtaken India as first.

Other than the bling and expensive look and feel, Nokia Oro has exactly the same functions as other recent smartphones from Nokia. Not a surprising fact, though. The phone is made for the rich who would likely to care more about how the phone would look than its tech specs.

“There’s pentaband radio connectivity, up-to HSDPA 3G and WiFi. There’s a 3.5-inch AMOLED display, an 8-megapixel camera with 720p video recording and all the rest,” as described in Nokia’s blog post.

Nokia explained that the Nokia Oro was built for markets like Middle East and Russia, where premium products are highly demanded. Russia, in particular, is where Nokia would likely to push Nokia Oro.

“Premium products like Nokia Oro have always been best sellers in Russia. We have a large number of users who are looking for products with a build quality and superior materials that attest to their success and social standing. In some areas, possession of such premium products is the passport to being taken seriously,” said Nokia’s General Manager for Russia, Gabriel Speratti.

Nokia Oro will be available in selected countries across the Europe, Eastern Europe, China, and the Middle East in Q3 2011. The gold plated smartphone will cost a minimum of $1,250 before local taxes and telecom operator subsidies. Tough luck, India.
