Happy Mid-Autumn Festival!
Both search engine giants, Google and Baidu, are celebrating the Chinese festival with doodles right smack in the middle of their homepages. Nothing can be seen on Yahoo and Bing so far.
For those who don’t know what Mid-Autumn is all about, it is a holiday where folks sit together to enjoy a nice cup of tea with delicious moon cakes while looking at the full moon. The old geezers always say that the moon is the roundest and brightest today. So if you have five minutes to spare today, lift your head up to enjoy the beauty of the full moon.
Moon Rabbit in Angry Birds Seasons
For the traditional meaning of the festival, I will point you to Wikipedia. But keep in mind that Wikipedia represents just one version of the Mid-Autumn Festival story (Yes, it’s that confusing!).
One fun tidbit that many people talk about is that the full moon will show a mark that resembles a rabbit — called moon rabbit or jade rabbit. The rabbit, according to my understanding (and confirmed by my friends in Taiwan), helps to pound medicine for Chang’e, the moon goddess. It is also often used as an adorable mascot to attract attention, used aptly by Google, Taobao, and Angry Birds for this instance.
Speaking of Mid-Autumn Festival, we can’t miss out on moon cakes. It’s isn’t something I fancy personally but having it once a year is okay by me. Important Anniversaries
Of course, we can’t forget the two important anniversaries that passed over the weekend. Yesterday marked six months since the Tohoku earthquake in Japan, and ten years since the 9/11 attacks in New York. So we hope that if you’re celebrating on this holiday, that you take a few moments to remember those tragedies as well.
