Nintendo shares jump as Switch 2 Pokémon sales top 5 million

Nintendo shares rose as much as 7.5% to 8,945 yen (US$56) in Tokyo on August 14 after the Kyoto-based game company said global sales of Switch 2-exclusive Pokémon Pokopia had topped 5 million units since its March launch.

Nintendo also plans to launch Switch consoles in Indonesia this year.

Analysts said the game’s popularity could support demand for the new console.

Nintendo sold 3.82 million Switch 2 units in its latest fiscal first quarter, though that quarterly hardware figure was down 34.4% year on year.

Recent earnings also lifted sentiment. Nintendo said it had factored roughly 100 billion yen (US$628 million) in higher component and tariff costs into cost of sales, particularly for memory, while quarterly profit and revenue still beat analysts’ estimates.

The planned launch concerns Switch consoles generally, not specifically the Switch 2.

Any expansion would come in Indonesia, where authorities have previously barred sales of some foreign electronics over local-content requirements, and where online game publishers must register their systems before launch.
