Sources: SoftBank-backed Unacademy looks to acquire Twitch-like game-streaming firm
“Indian online learning platform Unacademy is in advanced talks to acquire Rheo TV, a less than two-year-old startup founded by two former Unacademy employees,” reported TechCrunch, citing people with knowledge of the matter.
Details:
- The reported deal will value Rheo TV at more than US$10 million.
- Rheo TV’s team – said to be made up of fewer than a dozen people – is expected join Unacademy following the acquisition.
Context:
- Founded in 2019 by two former Unacademy employees, Rheo TV is a Twitch-like game-streaming platform. It rewards creators based on their gameplays and follower base, among other criteria.
- Edtech unicorn Unacademy has raised US$398.5 million to date. It is backed by the likes of Tiger Global Management, General Atlantic, Sequoia India, SoftBank, and Facebook.
