Zomato founder joins $10m round for Indian defense drone firm
Defence-focused drone tech firm Vayudh has raised US$10 million in a funding round led by Dharana Capital.
Other participants included Zomato founder Deepinder Goyal, LetsVenture, and Navam Capital.
Founded in 2016, Vayudh is a subsidiary of BotLab Dynamics. The company develops drones for battlefield intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance.
It plans to use the new funding to boost R&D and expand manufacturing to support India’s defence sector.
The company reports over 300,000 autonomous flying hours in defence and commercial use, with a focus on swarm drone tech.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ India’s drone policy transformation has catalyzed unprecedented sector growth
Vayudh’s funding comes amid a dramatic transformation in India’s drone regulatory environment that began in 2021, shifting from a restrictive approach to actively supportive policies.
The government has implemented multiple initiatives to boost the sector, including Production-Linked Incentive schemes, Drone Shakti programs, and most recently, a proposed uniform 5% GST rate to replace variable rates of 5-28% that complicated business operations1.
These policy changes have directly stimulated the drone startup ecosystem, which now includes over 200 companies that have collectively raised more than $140 million since 20142.
The government’s strategic focus on indigenous manufacturing aims to reduce India’s heavy reliance on foreign UAVs—the country currently accounts for 22.5% of global UAV imports3.
This regulatory evolution explains why Vayudh isn’t an isolated success but part of a broader pattern of increasing investment activity, with five significant funding rounds in the drone sector in just the past four months.
2️⃣ Defense applications remain the cornerstone of India’s drone industry despite commercial growth
While commercial drone applications are growing rapidly, Vayudh’s focus on defense technology highlights how military applications continue to anchor India’s drone sector.
The Indian defense drone market is particularly strategic, with projections showing the overall Indian drone market reaching $13-15 billion by 20304, driven significantly by military and security requirements.
