Zhipu begins building 1GW AI data center on domestic chips

China-based AI model developer Zhipu AI begun building a 1-gigawatt AI computing data center in China using only domestically produced AI chips, according to media reports.

Following the reports, shares of Hong Kong-listed Zhipu rose 8.65% to HK$967.5 (US$120).

The reports also said Zhipu completed its acquisition of Zhongke Jiahe, also known as XCore Sigma. Zhongke Jiahe is a Chinese heterogeneous computing software company.

Analysts said the acquisition would help Zhipu use different AI chips more efficiently, while the data center project would expand computing supply for large model training.

A 1GW facility is unusually large for an AI data center.

The project also reflects China’s broader push to develop local AI hardware after the US added Zhipu to its US Commerce Department list. Washington later restricted sales of AI chips designed specifically for China.
