Zepto launches 10-min pharmacy delivery in India’s four cities

Zepto has launched Zepto Pharmacy, a 10-minute medicine delivery service, in parts of Mumbai, Bengaluru, Delhi NCR, and Hyderabad.

The India-based quick commerce company spent the past year piloting the service to refine customer experience, supply chain, operations, and compliance, said CEO Aadit Palicha.

The platform currently delivers over-the-counter medicines, and Zepto has not specified whether prescription drugs are available at launch.

Zepto joins competitors in this space. Blinkit recently began piloting prescription medicine delivery in select areas of Bengaluru, offering free doctor consultations for customers unable to upload prescriptions.

Swiggy also entered the market through a partnership with PharmEasy, enabling prescription medicine sales via its app and dark stores.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Quick commerce pharmacy faces significant regulatory compliance gaps

Zepto’s cautious 12-month pilot approach reflects the serious regulatory challenges plaguing India’s e-pharmacy sector.

A recent study found that e-pharmacies in India met an average of only 7.5 out of 14 proposed regulatory requirements, with 34% illegally listing narcotics for sale1. This widespread non-compliance has prompted the government to develop stricter regulations specifically targeting rapid medicine delivery services2.

The regulatory gaps are particularly concerning given that many e-pharmacy platforms lack proper licensing and fail to provide comprehensive drug information to consumers3.

Current e-pharmacy regulations were primarily designed for traditional pharmacies and don’t adequately address the unique challenges of online medicine sales, creating potential risks for patient safety4.

Zepto’s emphasis on “extremely high operational standards” and measured scaling approach suggests the company recognizes these compliance risks that have affected the broader industry.

2️⃣ Market timing suggests pharmacy delivery is reaching mainstream adoption

The simultaneous entry of major quick commerce players into pharmacy delivery indicates this sector is moving beyond the early adoption phase.

Blinkit recently began piloting prescription medicine delivery in Bengaluru, while Swiggy partnered with PharmEasy for similar services, creating a competitive rush among India’s top delivery platforms[original article]. This clustering of market entries typically signals that consumer demand has reached a tipping point.
