Zepto changes name ahead of IPO

Zepto, the quick commerce platform, has changed its registered entity name from Kiranakart Technologies Private Limited to Zepto Private Limited.

This change has been approved by the Registrar of Companies and is part of the company’s preparations for its initial public offering (IPO) later this year, according to a report by Moneycontrol.

This move aligns Zepto with industry peers such as Zomato and Swiggy, which also changed their names prior to their IPOs.

In preparation for the IPO, Zepto has appointed Akhil Gupta, vice chairman of Bharti Enterprises, as an independent director on its board.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Strategic name changes before IPOs reflect market positioning tactics beyond simple rebranding

Zepto’s name change from Kiranakart Technologies to Zepto Private Limited represents a broader pattern in the quick commerce industry, with competitors making similar moves.

This follows Swiggy’s transition from Bundl Technologies to Swiggy Private Limited before its IPO, emphasizing a deliberate strategy to strengthen brand recognition and simplify investor relations 1.

The name changes in this sector go beyond cosmetic rebranding, as they signal a company’s evolution and help establish stronger market identities as they prepare to face public market scrutiny.

Companies undergoing such transformations typically aim to align their corporate identities with their consumer-facing brands, making their business models more intuitive for potential investors.

This pattern is also seen in major tech companies, as with Facebook’s transition to Meta and Apple Computer’s simplification to Apple, designed to reflect expanded business scopes 2.

2️⃣ Quick commerce companies pivot from startup identities to reflect market positioning

Zepto’s journey from Kiranakart to becoming a major quick commerce player worth over $5 billion shows how these companies strategically evolve their identities as their business models mature.

Founded in July 2021, Zepto initially focused on traditional grocery delivery before pivoting to the quick commerce model and establishing a network of dark stores for rapid delivery 3.

This evolution mirrors the journey of competitor Blinkit (formerly Grofers), which similarly rebranded to emphasize its transition from standard grocery delivery to 10-minute delivery promises 4.
