YouTube updates monetization rules to tackle AI content misuse
YouTube will update its monetization policies under the YouTube Partner Program (YPP) on July 15, 2025, to address concerns regarding “inauthentic” content.
The changes aim to clarify guidelines on the types of content eligible for revenue generation.
The specifics of the new policies have not yet been released.
However, YouTube’s Help documentation states that creators must produce “original” and “authentic” content.
The update will offer clearer definitions of “inauthentic” content, especially in response to the growing use of AI-generated media.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ YouTube’s monetization policies reflect a seven-year pattern of increasing quality control
This latest crackdown on “inauthentic” content continues YouTube’s consistent trajectory of raising the bar for monetization eligibility since at least 2017.
In February 2018, YouTube dramatically increased requirements from just 10,000 lifetime views to 1,000 subscribers plus 4,000 hours of watch time in the past year 1.
Each policy update has responded to specific platform challenges, from brand safety concerns in 2018 to today’s AI-generated content proliferation, showing how YouTube prioritizes advertiser confidence in its ecosystem.
While YouTube frames these changes as “minor updates,” the historical pattern reveals a strategic, incremental approach to content quality control that consistently narrows monetization opportunities while protecting the platform’s reputation.
The timing is particularly notable as YouTube now faces what 404 Media identified as an influx of “AI slop,” including fake crime documentaries and fabricated news videos, threatening both user experience and advertiser confidence in ways that earlier policy updates couldn’t have anticipated.
2️⃣ The economics of AI-generated content create unsustainable incentives
With an estimated $0.018 per ad view translating to approximately $18 per 1,000 views 2, AI tools have dramatically altered the cost-benefit equation for content creators.
AI now assists with nearly every aspect of production, from idea generation to script writing, video editing, caption generation (which can increase engagement by 40%), and thumbnail creation 3.
