YouTube to test new AI age verification in US

YouTube will start testing an AI-powered age-verification system in the United States from August 13, 2025 to identify whether viewers are adults or minors based on their viewing habits.

The new system will only assess users who are logged in, regardless of the birth date provided during account creation.

If a viewer is flagged as under 18, YouTube will apply existing restrictions, such as limited recommendations, privacy warnings, and reminders to take breaks.

YouTube, owned by Google, does not serve personalized ads to users under 18.

Users incorrectly identified as minors can challenge the decision by submitting a government-issued ID, credit card, or selfie.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Supreme Court ruling accelerates industry-wide age verification adoption

YouTube’s AI testing comes directly after the Supreme Court upheld a Texas law in June 2025 requiring age verification for adult content access, creating legal momentum for similar measures across platforms1.

The Court applied intermediate scrutiny rather than the stricter standard typically used for speech restrictions, making it significantly easier for states to enforce age verification requirements2.

This legal shift is already influencing multiple social media companies beyond just YouTube.

TikTok began rolling out its own AI age verification system just days before YouTube’s announcement, flagging users suspected to be under 13 and requiring ID verification3.

The timing suggests platforms are proactively implementing these systems to stay ahead of potential state-level legislation rather than waiting for regulatory mandates.

2️⃣ Early AI age verification attempts reveal significant accuracy challenges

TikTok’s recent rollout demonstrates the technical difficulties YouTube will likely face, with users reporting widespread false positives that lock them out of their accounts3.

Users have shared frustrations about being incorrectly flagged as underage, requiring them to submit government-issued IDs or credit cards to regain access to basic platform features.
