YouTube agrees to pay Trump $22m in suspension lawsuit
YouTube has agreed to pay president Donald Trump US$22 million to settle a lawsuit over the suspension of his account after the January 6, 2021, US Capitol riot.
The settlement also includes US$2.5 million to other plaintiffs, such as the American Conservative Union and writer Naomi Wolf.
Court documents show Trump’s award will go into a trust for a White House ballroom renovation project.
Trump filed lawsuits against YouTube, Meta, and X in 2021, claiming that suspending his accounts violated his First Amendment rights.
Legal experts noted the First Amendment does not prevent private companies from setting their own content policies.
Meta and X have already settled similar lawsuits.
Google, which owns YouTube, declined to comment.
