YouTube agrees to follow Australia’s under-16 ban
YouTube will begin automatically signing out users under 16 in Australia from their accounts starting December 10, 2025 in line with new national social media regulations.
The law, passed in late 2024, requires major platforms to block underage account holders in an effort to safeguard children online.
YouTube, which is owned by Google, previously opposed its inclusion in the ban, amid speculation that the company was considering legal action.
Affected users will only regain access to their accounts once they turn 16.
Other platforms impacted by the law include Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Reddit, Snapchat, Twitch, X (formerly Twitter), and Threads.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Australia’s age law requires platforms to prove age compliance
- Starting 10 December 2025, covered social platforms must take reasonable steps to block under-16 accounts, close existing ones, and cannot rely on user declarations 1.
- Fines can reach 49.5 million Australian dollars for serious breaches 1. Companies carry the duty, not children or parents and platforms must replace promises with technical enforcement using age assurance (methods to verify or estimate a user’s age, such as document checks or AI-based face analysis).
- Google, YouTube’s parent, is weighing a legal challenge to YouTube’s inclusion 1. The law bans sole reliance on self-declared ages or parental vouching, and a dynamic platform list pushed Discord (a chat and community app popular with gamers) plus Roblox (a user-generated gaming platform) to add age checks preemptively 1.
Age verification vendors see fast-growing demand across platforms
- Age assurance providers such as Yoti (a digital identity verification company) and k-ID (a child-safety and age verification provider) face immediate demand 2. Facebook and Instagram need systems live by December 2025 2. TikTok and Reddit need them as well 2. Snapchat and Twitch are in the same group 2.
- Snapchat uses bank-linked ConnectID (an Australian bank-backed digital identity service) plus k-ID’s facial estimation (AI-based age estimation) 3. Platforms favor layered checks to cut false positives while meeting reasonable steps 3. The government set aside 6.5 million Australian dollars for technical trials to assess effectiveness 4.
- Malaysia and New Zealand are watching Australia’s rollout and weighing similar rules 3. Indonesia and several European nations are as well 3. Vendors that perform well in Australia can scale globally as momentum builds 3.
