New York approves power line for Micron’s $100b chip plant
The New York State Public Service Commission has approved a new underground transmission line to connect an existing Clay substation with Micron Technology‘s planned semiconductor facility in Onondaga County.
Micron, a US-based semiconductor company, has proposed a megafab in Central New York as part of a US$100 billion investment announced in 2022.
The two-mile, 345-kilovolt line is described by state officials as key infrastructure for the project.
The commission also approved environmental and construction plans for the first phase, which includes an eastern expansion of the Clay substation and installation of equipment to link it to the future Micron facility.
Micron’s facility is expected to create more than 50,000 jobs in the region over the next two decades, including 9,000 direct positions at Micron.

Power constraints could slow Micron’s New York chip timeline
- Empire Center says Micron’s Clay complex will need about 1.85 GW of continuous power, roughly the annual use of New Hampshire and Vermont 1.
- A 345-kilovolt line moves power to the site yet does not create supply. The New York Power Authority (NYPA) offered 140 MW of hydropower, and Micron signed a 178 MW onshore wind agreement. Together they cover about a tenth of yearly demand, leaving about 90% open 1.
- A local analysis says full demand would take about 4 GW of offshore wind or 16 GW of solar covering about 200 square miles, and New York lacks that buildout or a firm timeline 2.

Closing the firm power gap
- Some energy analysts urge firm onsite generation for reliability, meaning always available power at the facility. Options include a combined-cycle gas cogeneration plant, a high-efficiency natural-gas unit that makes electricity while capturing waste heat. Nuclear is viable yet pricier, and both paths need separate approvals that could affect schedules 2.
- Because wind output varies with weather, grid-scale storage such as large battery systems would be needed to keep 24/7 supply for fab operations 1.
