YMTC-backed fund invests in Chinese chipmaker SOI Micro
A venture fund backed by Yangtze Memory Technologies Corp (YMTC), China’s top producer of NAND flash memory, has taken a stake in Guangzhou-based semiconductor manufacturer SOI Micro.
The company is developing fully depleted silicon-on-insulator (FD-SOI) technology, according to a recent Chinese corporate filing.
SOI Micro’s registered capital rose to 2.5 billion yuan (US$375 million) from 2.4 billion yuan (US$354 million), and Wuhan-based Changcun Industry Investment Fund was added as a shareholder, though the size of the investment and stake were not disclosed.
The move extends Changcun beyond memory-chip supply chain investments into specialised logic manufacturing.
SOI Micro is developing a low-power logic process based on FD-SOI, an alternative to mainstream chipmaking processes that aims to reduce reliance on overseas technology and strengthen China’s domestic chip capabilities.
Changcun was established in 2023 by YMTC and the Hubei Integrated Circuit Industry Investment Fund, a state-backed investment vehicle in Wuhan.
YMTC was added to the US Entity List in December 2022.
