YC-backed travel startup launches credit-free miles for Gen Z
Rove, a new travel tech startup, has launched a universal airline mile loyalty program to make travel rewards more accessible for younger users.
Co-founded by Max Morganroth and Arhan Chhabra, Rove is backed by Y Combinator’s winter 2024 batch and has raised US$2 million from General Catalyst, Soma Capital, and others.
Rove has partnered with 11 airline mile programs, including Air France-KLM, Aeromexico, Finnair, and Qatar Airways.
Unlike traditional credit card-based reward systems, Rove allows users to earn airline miles through affiliate marketing partnerships with over 7,000 merchants via its Google Chrome shopping extension.
Rove also offers miles for hotel bookings on its platform, converting hotel commissions, up to 40%, into airline miles for users.
Miles earned can be redeemed across about 140 airlines, and Rove’s portal helps users find optimal flight deals without needing a credit history.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Loyalty programs evolved from marketing tools to billion-dollar profit centers
Airline frequent flyer programs originated in the early 1980s when American Airlines launched AAdvantage in May 1981 as a simple customer retention tool in response to airline deregulation 1.
What began as marketing initiatives has transformed into major profit engines, with frequent flyer programs now representing up to half of some airlines’ profits according to industry analysis 2.
The financial model shifted dramatically when airlines began selling miles to credit card companies, with banks purchasing billions of miles annually to offer as rewards, creating substantial income streams separate from actual flight operations 2.
This evolution explains why Rove’s approach is appealing to airlines. It represents another channel to monetize miles while reaching consumers who lack access to traditional credit card rewards.
The history of these programs shows consistent innovation in distribution channels, from the original direct airline relationships to bank partnerships and now potentially through affiliate marketing platforms like Rove.
2️⃣ Gen Z faces unique barriers to travel rewards despite strong travel aspirations
Research indicates Gen Z travelers have significant spending power (estimated at $450 billion globally) and prioritize travel experiences more than previous generations 3.
