Y Combinator-backed US freight tech startup bags $4m seed round
Oway, founded in 2023 and backed by Y Combinator and General Catalyst, has closed a US$4 million seed round.
Founded in 2023, the company uses machine learning and electronic logging device data to match empty trailer space on long-haul trucks with shipping demand in the US.
The platform aims to lower shipping costs by connecting shippers with available truck capacity on underutilized routes.
Oway claims it can automate shipping and insurance paperwork and cut the cost of moving a sub-2,000-pound pallet between Los Angeles and Dallas from about US$350 to as low as US$140.
The startup, currently focused on the US market, works with fleet operators though specific partnerships have not been disclosed.
Oway operates with a team of 12 and plans to expand its tech-driven logistics service further.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Regulatory compliance created unexpected business infrastructure
The Electronic Logging Device mandate that transformed Oway’s business model into reality was actually designed to solve a completely different problem.
When the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration required all commercial trucks to install ELDs in December 2017, the goal was reducing driver fatigue and accidents through better compliance monitoring 1.
However, a comprehensive study analyzing millions of driver inspections found that while the mandate improved compliance with hours-of-service regulations, it didn’t reduce accident rates and may have actually increased unsafe driving behaviors like speeding 2.
The unintended consequence was creating a nationwide real-time tracking infrastructure that startups like Oway now leverage to identify empty trailer space and optimize freight matching.
This shows how regulatory compliance requirements can create valuable data infrastructure that enables entirely new business models, even when the original policy goals aren’t fully achieved.
2️⃣ Freight inefficiency represents a massive but challenging market opportunity
The scale of wasted freight capacity that Oway is targeting represents one of logistics’ most persistent problems.
