X’s first reality show lets viewers invest in startups
Social media platform X, will launch a reality TV show titled “Going Public” on June 24, 2025.
The show will enable viewers to invest directly in startups featured in the program, marking X’s entry into original programming.
Produced with Crush Capital, the series follows entrepreneurs vying for funding, using Regulation Crowdfunding to raise up to US$5 million each.
The finale, initially set for June 13, 2025, was delayed to allow producers more time to strengthen the live show.
Concerns have emerged over a regulatory probe involving Dutch Mendenhall and Amy Vaughn, founders of one featured startup.
X has previously faced criticism for misinformation on its platform, which may increase scrutiny around this initiative.
While the show seeks to engage smaller investors, its success may hinge on addressing these challenges.

1️⃣ Reality TV’s evolution from passive entertainment to active investment platforms
X’s “Going Public” represents the culmination of a two-decade evolution in entrepreneurship-focused reality television that has progressively increased viewer engagement.
Early shows like “American Chopper” (2003) and “Pawn Stars” simply documented entrepreneurs at work, while “Shark Tank” (2009) turned pitching into entertainment but kept viewers as passive observers1.
This evolved with “Meet the Drapers” (2018), which pioneered viewer participation in startup funding, though still through separate platforms rather than direct integration2.
The progression reflects broader media trends toward interactivity, with “Going Public” taking the final step by embedding investment capabilities directly within the viewing experience.
Research shows these shows have significant influence. Shark Tank alone has featured thousands of pitches across ten seasons, with successful deals demonstrating how entertainment can translate to real economic impact3.
By enabling direct investment through Regulation Crowdfunding provisions established in 2016, X’s show leverages regulations that have already generated nearly $1.5 billion in startup capital, connecting viewers directly to investment opportunities previously accessible only to venture capitalists.
