Xpeng says it can adapt driver-assist AI with little data
Xpeng, a Guangzhou-based electric vehicle maker and Volkswagen partner in China, said it can adapt its advanced driver-assistance software for European markets with limited local data.
Liu Xianming, Xpeng’s head of general intelligence, said the company fine-tuned the system from one European country to another in about two weeks, using as little as one ten-thousandth of the data needed to train its underlying AI models.
Xpeng is working with European regulators and remains “on track” to introduce Navigation Guided Pilot in 2027, Liu said.
The company must still show the system can operate reliably under European conditions, including different traffic rules and interactions with cyclists and pedestrians.
The rollout depends on regulatory approval. Vehicle safety and automated-driving technologies are regulated at the European Union level, and lane-keeping systems are covered by specific rules.
Xpeng has launched in Spain and partnered with a UK distributor.
Its Volkswagen partnership includes joint development of two smart EVs for China.
