Xiaomi unveils AI voice tech for smart homes, EVs

Xiaomi has released an open-source AI voice model called MiDashengLM-7B to enhance its automotive and smart home products.

The Beijing-based company said the model builds on its existing voice technology and incorporates Alibaba’s open-source Qwen2.5-Omni-7B model.

Xiaomi posted technical details and benchmarks for MiDashengLM-7B on its WeChat account.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Xiaomi’s voice model release caps years of systematic AI investment

Xiaomi’s new open-source voice model represents the culmination of a strategic AI transformation that began years ago, not a sudden pivot.

The company established dedicated artificial intelligence, big data, and cloud computing departments in February 2019, with CEO Lei Jun declaring that “technology is a matter of life and death for Xiaomi”1.

Even earlier, Xiaomi signed a strategic partnership with Microsoft in 2018 to enhance its AI capabilities through Azure cloud integration2.

This foundation enabled Xiaomi to build a massive IoT ecosystem that by 2017 already included 85 million connected devices across 400 partners3.

The voice model’s integration across cars and smart home devices demonstrates how this long-term AI investment is now paying dividends, allowing Xiaomi to leverage its existing hardware ecosystem as a distribution channel for AI capabilities.

2️⃣ Open-source AI has become China’s competitive weapon against Western dominance

Xiaomi’s decision to open-source its voice model follows a proven Chinese strategy where companies use free access to build developer ecosystems and market share.

Major Chinese tech giants have rapidly embraced this approach. For example, Alibaba and Tencent integrated Meta’s Llama 3.1 model within days of its July 2024 release, offering developers free compute resources to encourage adoption4.

This strategy appears to be working: Alibaba’s open-source Qwen-VLo variants have already achieved over 40 million downloads5.

Research shows that 89% of organizations now use open-source AI models, primarily driven by cost-effectiveness compared to proprietary alternatives6.
