Xiaomi shares hit record high after YU7 SUV launch

Xiaomi’s shares jumped over 5% on June 27, hitting a record high after the launch of its new electric luxury SUV, the YU7.

Priced at 253,500 yuan (US$35,322), it aims to compete with Tesla’s Model Y, which starts at 263,500 yuan in China (US$36,750).

CEO Lei Jun announced the YU7 on June 26, revealing that the model received over 200,000 orders within three minutes.

Pre-sales began that evening, with deliveries expected within one to five weeks.

The YU7 offers a driving range of 760 kilometers (472 miles), exceeding the 719 kilometers of Tesla’s extended-range Model Y.

It features driver-assist software powered by Nvidia’s Thor chip, gesture controls, parking assistance, Apple CarPlay, and Apple Music.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Xiaomi’s rapid diversification mirrors China’s tech-to-auto transition pattern

Xiaomi’s move from smartphones to electric vehicles represents a significant pivot for a company that derived 60% of its revenue from mobile phones as recently as 2022 1.

Since announcing its entry into EVs in March 2021, Xiaomi has moved with remarkable speed, constructing a factory with planned capacity of 300,000 vehicles annually and already releasing two models within just three years 2.

This rapid diversification follows a pattern seen with other Chinese tech companies entering the automotive space, contributing to China’s position as the global leader in EV production, sales, and technological innovation 3.

The strategy appears to be working. Xiaomi’s stock reached record highs following the YU7 launch, with shares surging 8% after the SUV received 289,000 orders within its first hour of availability 4.

With analysts projecting annual sales of 300,000 to 360,000 units for the YU7 alone, Xiaomi’s ambitious transition demonstrates how tech companies can leverage brand recognition and technological expertise to disrupt traditional automotive markets 5.

2️⃣ Ecosystem integration creates competitive advantages beyond traditional automakers

The YU7’s integration with Xiaomi’s ecosystem of 700 million IoT devices represents a significant advantage that traditional automakers struggle to match 5.
