Xiaomi shares dip as co-founder Lin Bin plans $2b stake sale

Xiaomi shares dropped after the company said co-founder and vice-chairman Lin Bin plans to sell up to US$2 billion worth of shares starting from December 2026.

In a filing, Xiaomi said Lin intends to sell class B shares with sales limited to US$500 million in any rolling 12-month period and not exceeding US$2 billion in total.

The proceeds are mainly earmarked for setting up an investment fund.

Xiaomi shares fell 1.4% to HK$38.68 (US$4.98) shortly after the market opened, before recovering some losses, while the Hang Seng Index rose 0.4%.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Lin Bin plans a $2 billion sale under 2% of Xiaomi’s value with staggered timing

  • Xiaomi is valued at about 1.02 trillion HKD, roughly $130 billion USD 1, so a $2 billion sale sits under 2% of the company.
  • Sales will be capped at $500 million per rolling 12 months from December 2026 to limit shocks, while the effect hinges on daily trading liquidity that the filing does not quantify 23.
  • Lin remains vice-chairman, which signals ongoing involvement as he sells in phases.
  • The December 2026 start date gives markets a buffer before any stock hits the tape.

Entrepreneurs and family offices (private investment firms that manage wealthy families’ capital) can track Lin Bin’s fund launch for China consumer tech deals

  • Xiaomi said proceeds will mainly seed an investment fund company 2, creating a potential $2 billion vehicle from late 2026.
  • Founders in smart devices or Internet of Things (IoT) or consumer electronics could gain a seasoned backer as Lin grew Xiaomi from 2010 to 56,231 employees 1 with expertise across smartphones, IoT products, internet services 4.
  • Venture capital firms and institutions may see co-invest chances with Lin’s fund in deals that need hardware software integration skills or China entry know-how.
  • Fund service providers, legal advisors, and placement agents (specialists that help raise capital from investors) can prepare for mandates as the vehicle takes shape ahead of the first sales.
