Xiaomi launches open-source AI model for self-driving, robotics
Xiaomi has released MiMo-Embodied, an open-source AI model that combines autonomous driving and robotics applications.
The company made technical details and project files available on Hugging Face and GitHub, and said the model achieved high performance in both embodied AI and autonomous driving tasks.
Luo Fuli, a former DeepSeek researcher who recently joined Xiaomi, is part of the project and will present as head of the MiMo team at Xiaomi’s partner conference in December.
Xiaomi recently reported its 500,000th EV produced at its Beijing plant, 19 months after its first delivery.
The company posted Q3 revenue of 113.1 billion yuan (US$15.9 billion), up 22% year-on-year, with adjusted net profit up 81% to 11.3 billion yuan (US$1.6 billion).
Its EV, AI, and other new businesses generated a profit for the first time, with revenue reaching 29 billion yuan (US$4.1 billion), nearly triple from a year ago.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
MiMo-Embodied open-source tag needs proof
- Xiaomi posted MiMo-Embodied on Hugging Face (an AI model repository) with an MIT license 1. The test is whether full model weights, training code, and deployment frameworks work for others, as sources skip concrete deployment paths despite a technical report 2.
- The team claims state-of-the-art on 17 embodied AI and 12 autonomous driving benchmarks 3. The docs omit hardware needs and inference speeds, plus supported platforms outside research labs. So robotics or Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) use may need extra engineering.
- Existing ROS 2 (Robot Operating System 2) integrations on NVIDIA Jetson Orin (an embedded system-on-module for on-device AI) involve complex setup 456, so getting MiMo-Embodied on robots would take work and shows a gap between a research drop and production readiness.
Integrators can build services if edge-ready
- If it runs well on edge, robotics firms may ship packages for NVIDIA Jetson. ROS 2 Humble is in apt on JetPack 6 (Ubuntu 22.04) with tier-0 ROS support 4, and Isaac ROS (NVIDIA’s accelerated ROS libraries) adds hardware acceleration 6.
- Autonomous vehicle startups and ADAS developers can use services that bundle MiMo-Embodied with sensor fusion frameworks. Camera and depth stacks on Jetson need setup of ROS 2 wrappers and image transport plugins 5.
- Edge AI tool vendors might release SDKs (software development kits) that simplify MiMo-Embodied for makers and ease links to iRobot Create 3 (a mobile robot base used for education and research) 6, which could open a market for cross-embodied AI middleware.
