Xiaomi to invest nearly $28b in core tech R&D over five years

Xiaomi will invest 200 billion yuan (US$27.7 billion) in core technology research and development over the next five years.

This was announced by founder and CEO Lei Jun at an event in Beijing.

At the same event, Xiaomi revealed its first electric SUV, marking its entry into the electric vehicle market.

This investment shows Xiaomi’s strong commitment to growing its technology expertise.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Strategic R&D escalation reflects Xiaomi’s ambitious multi-sector approach

Xiaomi’s $27.8 billion R&D investment announcement is part of a larger pattern of increasing technology commitments, with previous plans including RMB 105 billion ($14.5 billion) from 2021 to 2025 1.

This substantial increase signals Xiaomi’s transformation from its smartphone roots to a multi-technology company, now simultaneously competing in smartphones, electric vehicles, and semiconductor design.

The announcement coincides with Xiaomi’s launch of both the YU7 electric SUV (competing with Tesla’s Model Y) and its own Xring01 chip 2, representing the company’s biggest push yet into high-value technology verticals.

Xiaomi has been systematically building its innovation capabilities, with R&D spending reaching 7.6% of total revenue in 2022 and accumulating over 29,600 patents by 2023 3.

This investment strategy aligns with other Chinese tech giants like Huawei, which have increasingly focused on technological self-sufficiency amid global supply chain uncertainties.

2️⃣ Xiaomi’s recovery playbook: investing through market turbulence

The massive R&D commitment follows Xiaomi’s historical pattern of making bold moves during challenging periods, similar to how it restructured operations and opened offline retail stores after its dramatic 2016 decline when smartphone sales plummeted from 70 million to 41 million units 4.

This investment comes as Xiaomi has regained market leadership in China with 13.3 million smartphones shipped in Q1 2025 (19% market share), representing 40% year-on-year growth despite overall market challenges 5.

Xiaomi’s aggressive investment strategy amid global economic uncertainty reflects its long-term vision of establishing technological independence, particularly through semiconductor development with a planned $7 billion investment over the next decade 6.
