Xiaomi to deploy humanoid robots in its factories in 5 years

Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun said the company plans to deploy humanoid robots across its factories within five years.

The Chinese electronics firm is increasing its use of AI to upgrade manufacturing processes.

Lei pointed to Xiaomi’s automobile plant, where he said AI-powered inspection systems already speed up quality checks of large components.

He believes humanoid robots will help automate and improve efficiency on production lines.

Xiaomi is also considering expanding the use of these robots into homes in the future.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Xiaomi’s humanoid plan faces a higher bar from China’s regulator

  • Lei Jun set a five-year deployment target as China’s National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), the economic planner, warns of a humanoid bubble with 150 plus firms surging despite few factory deployments beyond pilots 1.
  • Xiaomi’s auto plant uses X-ray with AI vision for die-cast checks that take 2 seconds, run 10x faster than manual checks, and hit 5x the accuracy 2. Industrial-grade humanoid specs like payload capacity (how much weight a robot can handle), cycle times (task speed) or safety certifications remain undisclosed.
  • Planned oversight aims to curb copycat products and protect innovation 1. Xiaomi and peers may need pilots with technical documentation rather than prototype showcases such as CyberOne 3, its earlier prototype humanoid robot shown in demos.

Suppliers and integrators can target China’s humanoid roadmap before 2030

  • China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) plan for 2023 to 2025 backs a domestic innovation ecosystem 4, creating openings in safety software, simulation tools for virtual testing, plus actuator components (motors plus transmissions that move joints) as pilots expand.
  • The market could reach $6 billion by 2030 with 136,000 shipments 4. Mechanical systems and dexterous hands dominate the bill of materials 4. Suppliers can focus there, where Xiaomi and 150 plus Chinese firms will need partners 1.
  • Average selling prices could fall from $75,000 to $25,000 by 2035 4. Systems integrators that start now can build relationships in pilot phases before the 2030s growth wave tightens pricing and competition.
