Xiaomi denies YU7 electric SUV launch delay

Xiaomi has denied reports of a delay in the launch of its YU7 electric SUV.

The company confirmed that the vehicle is still scheduled to be released in June or July 2025, as said by CEO Lei Jun.

Wang Hua, Xiaomi’s head of public relations, asserted that the launch date “had not been changed.”

This statement follows a report which suggested that the release timeline for the YU7 had been postponed without a new date being provided.

The YU7 is expected to compete with Tesla’s Model Y. However, it was not showcased at the Shanghai Auto Show.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Chinese tech giants are rapidly reshaping the EV landscape

Xiaomi’s aggressive timeline for its YU7 SUV reflects China’s accelerated approach to electric vehicle development and production.

The company announced a $10 billion investment in electric vehicles in March 2021, and has already launched the SU7 sedan that reportedly outsold Tesla’s Model 3 in China with over 22,000 deliveries in a single month compared to Tesla’s 8,000 1.

This rapid pace from announcement to market contrasts with the traditional automotive development cycle, which typically takes 3-5 years from concept to production.

The YU7 SUV is strategically positioned to compete directly with Tesla’s Model Y, offering superior range (up to 480 miles) and larger dimensions (196.8 inches length versus Model Y’s smaller footprint) at a potentially lower price point starting around ¥250,000 (~$34,700) 23.

This accelerated timeline reflects broader trends in China’s EV industry, where companies like XPeng have quickly scaled from startups to significant market players by combining technological innovation with competitive pricing strategies 4.

2️⃣ Fatal crashes create critical moments for emerging EV brands

The recent fatal accident involving Xiaomi’s SU7 sedan represents a significant moment for the company’s automotive ambitions.

The crash, which resulted in three deaths while the vehicle’s advanced driving assistance system was active, led to an immediate 21% drop in Xiaomi’s share price, demonstrating how quickly safety incidents can impact investor confidence 5.
