Xiaomi debuts MiMo, an open-source reasoning AI model

Xiaomi has introduced MiMo, its first open-source large language model designed for reasoning tasks.

MiMo uses pretraining and post-training strategies to improve reasoning abilities. Although it has 7 billion parameters, the model has outperformed larger models in public benchmarks for math reasoning (AIME24-25) and code generation (LiveCodeBench v5), including OpenAI’s o1-mini and Alibaba’s Qwen-32B-Preview. MiMo shows strong performance in mathematical reasoning and code generation.

Xiaomi noted that the model is suitable for tasks requiring logical and mathematical inference. Its smaller size may make it practical for enterprise applications or edge computing environments with limited hardware.

The full technical report and the model are publicly available on GitHub and Hugging Face.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Xiaomi’s strategic expansion into AI aligns with its pattern of business reinvention

Xiaomi’s release of MiMo represents a continuation of the company’s history of strategic pivots in response to market challenges.

In 2016, Xiaomi experienced a dramatic drop in smartphone sales from 70 million units to 41 million, requiring a complete business model restructuring to recover its market position 1.

The company has consistently demonstrated a willingness to invest in new technologies, filing over 6,067 patents in 2016 alone as part of its commitment to improving technological capabilities 2.

This expansion into open-source AI models follows Xiaomi’s established pattern of diversification beyond hardware, similar to their earlier moves into smart home devices and lifestyle products that helped revitalize their business after the 2016 decline.

The MiMo release demonstrates how Xiaomi continues to follow the same playbook that reversed their fortunes in 2017, identifying emerging technology trends and rapidly positioning themselves as innovative players in new market segments.

2️⃣ Open-source AI models are emerging as enterprises’ preferred approach

By releasing MiMo as an open-source model, Xiaomi is aligning with a major shift in enterprise AI adoption preferences.

Research shows that 58% of organizations now use open-source components in at least half of their AI/ML projects, with 34% using them in three-quarters or more of their initiatives 3.

Enterprise leaders increasingly express concerns about vendor lock-in with proprietary models, driving a preference for open-source alternatives that offer greater control and customization potential 4.
