X to test Community Notes feature written by AI chatbots

Social platform X has announced a pilot program to test AI-generated submissions for its Community Notes feature.

This initiative will allow AI chatbots, including X’s Grok and third-party tools, to create notes that add context to posts.

Community Notes, which began during Twitter’s era, is a user-driven fact-checking system.

Under Elon Musk’s ownership, the system has expanded, allowing participating users to contribute notes that clarify or contextualize posts.

These notes are reviewed by other users before publication. AI-generated notes will follow the same vetting process to ensure accuracy.

A research paper from X’s Community Notes team describes that the system aims to combine human feedback with AI-generated content.

It highlights a collaborative approach where Large Language Models (LLMs) and human reviewers work together. Humans will provide final approval for notes before they are published.

X plans to evaluate the pilot program over the coming weeks before deciding on a broader release.

1️⃣ Community notes reduce misinformation engagement on social platforms

Research shows that X’s Community Notes feature has a substantial impact on limiting the spread of false information across the platform.

A February 2025 study found that attaching community notes to misleading content resulted in a 45.7% reduction in reposts and a 43.5% drop in likes 1.

These notes alter how information spreads by disrupting the viral diffusion patterns that typically help misinformation reach wide audiences.

The effectiveness explains why platforms like Meta, TikTok, and YouTube are developing similar community-based fact-checking systems.

The timing of note attachment is crucial. The study revealed that faster placement of notes increases their effectiveness at limiting the spread of misleading content 1.
