X to open username marketplace for paid subscribers

X will soon let Premium Plus and Premium Business subscribers search for and request inactive usernames through its new handle marketplace.

These handles will be divided into two categories: priority handles, which are free and generally include full names, phrases, or alphanumeric combinations, and rare handles, which will be sold for prices starting at US$2,500 and could reach seven figures, depending on demand.

If a subscriber obtains a new handle, their old username will be frozen.

X said that downgrading a subscription will result in the user losing access to the purchased handle and reverting to their original username.

The company is also considering adding a paid redirect feature in the future.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

X’s handle marketplace repurposes dormant usernames and raises questions about what counts as inactive

  • Handle Marketplace lets Premium Plus and Premium Business users request inactive usernames, though X has not defined what counts as inactive, such as how long an account sits unused 1.
  • X’s documentation says it cannot release inactive usernames at this time, which conflicts with a marketplace that redistributes them 2.
  • X has not explained how it will handle trademark disputes or impersonation claims tied to marketplace transfers 1.
  • Opaque rules could trigger fights over eligibility and brand rights, which raises legal and reputational risk for buyers of contested handles 1.

Developers and brand protection vendors can build tools for valuation or monitoring for brands that guard their digital identity

  • The marketplace may drive demand for monitoring that alerts when relevant handles open for requests or purchases, especially for brands not on X 1.
  • Entrepreneurs could develop Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) or automated tools to alert companies when relevant handles enter the marketplace, similar to domain name monitoring services.
  • This plan hinges on whether X allows programmatic access to listings or third-party brokering under its terms, and those details are not public 1.
  • Rare handles price from $2,500 to seven figures, so buyers may seek valuation help to gauge fair market value before purchase 1.
