X tests standalone Chat iOS app beta

X has begun beta testing a standalone iOS app for its private messaging service X Chat via Apple TestFlight, and the initial 1,000 slots filled within two hours.

X Chat is an upgraded version of the platform’s direct messages and the company said it was end-to-end encrypted.

Security experts have warned it is less secure than Signal and should not be trusted.

XAI product designer Michael Boswell said the program would expand to 5,000 users.

Early testers shared screenshots showing a simpler interface and a stylized xChat name. Message requests, Verified badges, and calling support remain in development.

Chats will sync with the X app and chat.x.com. An Android version is expected soon.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

X’s encryption claims don’t match its own policies

  • X markets X Chat as end-to-end encrypted (E2EE), but its model can fall short of Signal’s standard where only the sender and recipient can read message content 1.
  • X’s help page says it does not block “man-in-the-middle” attacks, plus X may access encrypted messages to meet legal demands such as blind subpoenas 2.
  • This differs from true E2EE, which makes it technically impossible for the service provider to decrypt user communications 2.
  • Cryptographers also question the phrase “Bitcoin style encryption” because Bitcoin’s blockchain is not encrypted in the usual way, which clouds what X is using 2.

A separate app can support an ‘everything app’ strategy

  • A standalone iOS app may seem to diverge from owner Elon Musk’s earlier plan to make X an everything app. A separate messaging app can still fit when it ties into X’s other products.
  • Unbundling chat from the main X app feed could create a dedicated communication layer that syncs with the X app plus the chat.x.com web app 3.
  • A modular build could let X add payments, commerce, or AI assistants inside chat while keeping the primary social feed cleaner 3.
  • Positioning messaging as a platform could support a super-app path that goes beyond social media 3.
