Workforce management firm Employer.com acquires fintech startup
Employer.com has acquired MainStreet.com, a fintech startup based in San Jose, for an undisclosed amount.
Founded in 2019, MainStreet focused on identifying research and development tax credits for startups.
It earned revenue by taking a percentage of the credits.
Following the acquisition, MainStreet’s 15-person team will join Employer.com, which has a total workforce of approximately 500 employees.
The deal reportedly increases Employer.com’s valuation to over US$700 million.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Fintech consolidation accelerates amid venture funding drought
The MainStreet acquisition illustrates a broader consolidation trend happening throughout the fintech sector during a significant market correction.
Fintech investments plummeted from their 2021 peak to 2024, forcing many venture-backed companies to seek acquisition opportunities rather than additional funding rounds1.
This shift is further evidenced by the increase in fintech M&A activity observed in Q4 2024, suggesting companies like Employer.com are capitalizing on market conditions to acquire distressed assets2.
MainStreet’s journey from a $500 million valuation to being acquired follows a pattern seen across fintech, where investors have moved away from mega-deals, with only 28% of invested capital now going to deals over $200 million compared to 47% in 20211.
The acquisition strategy deployed by Employer.com—which also recently acquired Bench Accounting and attempted to acquire Level—represents an approach to building capabilities during a period when many venture-backed companies are struggling to find sustainable business models.
2️⃣ Back-office consolidation creates integration challenges for customers
Employer.com’s strategic vision of “automating an end-to-end platform for the G Suite for the business back office” through acquisitions raises important questions about service consistency and customer experience.
The company’s recent acquisition of Bench Accounting revealed significant customer concerns about service continuity and quality, with many small business clients expressing uncertainty about their financial management during the transition period3.
