Workday Q2 beats estimates with $2.4b revenue

Workday reported Q2 earnings and revenue that beat analyst expectations, but its forecast for the next quarter matched estimates, leading to a drop in its share price during after-hours trading.

The US-based company, which provides finance and HR software, posted adjusted earnings per share of US$2.21 versus the expected US$2.11, and revenue of US$2.4 billion compared to the US$2.3 billion forecast.

Revenue rose 13% year-on-year, with net income rising to US$228 million from US$132 million.

Workday said it expects US$2.4 billion in total revenue for the current quarter, in line with analyst projections.

The company also projected full-year revenue of US$9.5 billion, matching consensus estimates.

However, Workday noted challenges in its state and local government segment, citing concerns about funding slowdowns.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Government sector exposure creates revenue headwinds amid funding uncertainty

Workday’s challenges in state and local government segments reflect broader federal funding pressures affecting the public sector.

CEO Carl Eschenbach specifically cited funding slowdowns impacting state-level clients, while higher education customers with healthcare systems are experiencing pullbacks due to federal policy changes 1.

The government sector represents a significant but increasingly volatile revenue stream for enterprise software companies like Workday, as public institutions face budget constraints and policy shifts that directly impact their technology spending.

Federal programs like Title I and Title IV grants, which are crucial for technology purchases in education, are experiencing delays and uncertainty that trickle down to vendors serving these markets 2.

2️⃣ Growth deceleration signals market maturation despite strong execution

Workday’s financial trajectory shows a company transitioning from high-growth to steady-growth phase, with revenue growth slowing from 16.4% in fiscal 2025 to a projected 14% in fiscal 2026 31.

Despite consistently beating earnings expectations—most recently $2.21 versus $2.11 expected—the company’s stock has declined 12% year-to-date while the Nasdaq gained 9% 1.
