WordPress launches AI assistant feature

WordPress has launched the AI Assistant feature on WordPress.com, available to sites on Business and Commerce plans at no extra cost.

The AI Assistant integrates into the site editor and Media Library, offering help with content, layout, and design directly within the platform.

Users can request layout changes, content edits, image generation, and translations through simple prompts.

In the Media Library, the AI can generate or modify images based on user specifications.

The feature also includes block notes, enabling collaboration and fact-checking within the editor.

To enable the AI Assistant, site owners can toggle the feature in their settings.

WordPress explains the AI Assistant aims to streamline site creation and management, embedding intelligence directly into the platform.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

WordPress.com’s AI Assistant puts it in tighter competition with Wix and Squarespace

  • The release puts WordPress.com closer to AI-driven site builders such as Wix and Squarespace, which have added generative AI features 1.
  • The assistant does not rely on one in-house model. For images, it uses Google Gemini’s “Nano Banana” models to generate and edit visuals in the Media Library, where WordPress.com keeps a site’s images and other files 2.
  • Automattic, the parent company of WordPress.com, says some features run on third-party AI providers such as OpenAI. It also says OpenAI does not train its models on user input 3.
  • Some AI site generators have drawn complaints for dated designs. CNET’s review of Wix’s AI site generator described that issue, which leaves room for WordPress.com to compete on design quality 4.

The AI web design race moves from writing content to taking actions

  • A built-in assistant that helps with copy, layout, and design inside WordPress.com’s editor raises the stakes for third-party WordPress plugins that sell similar AI tools 2.
  • The tool centers on generative AI that revises text and tweaks layouts and styles through natural-language commands, which are plain-English prompts typed in the editor 2.
  • A bigger shift involves “agentic” AI, which handles multi-step work such as repairing broken links or rebuilding a page based on performance data like click or scroll behavior 5.
  • This launch sets a higher floor for built-in AI. Future edge may go to platforms that ship agentic AI that behaves more like an autonomous web developer 5.
