WordPress has created an AI team to oversee the development of AI products within its developer community.

The team includes James LePage, head of AI at Automattic, Felix Arntz and Pascal Birchler from Google, and Jeff Paul, director of Open Source at web design firm 10up.

This initiative aims to formalize AI efforts within WordPress’ open-source ecosystem. Developers have been experimenting with AI tools like plugins for template building, SEO optimization, and chatbots.

WordPress Executive Director Mary Hubbard said a unified team will help prevent fragmentation and align AI development with the platform’s long-term goals.

Currently, WordPress developers have released 660 AI-related plugins.
