Wikipedia to use AI tools without replacing human volunteers

The Wikimedia Foundation, the nonprofit organization behind Wikipedia, announced its three-year AI strategy on April 30, 2025.

The foundation stated that AI will not replace its community of editors and volunteers.

Instead, AI tools will assist editors by automating repetitive tasks and enhancing access to information.

This will allow contributors to focus on decision-making and collaboration.

Generative AI will also help translate content and support new volunteers, while ensuring transparency and privacy.

The strategy aligns with Wikimedia’s principles and addresses the risks of misinformation from generative AI.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Nonprofits pioneering human-AI collaboration rather than replacement

Wikipedia’s approach of using AI to augment rather than replace human contributors reflects a broader trend in the nonprofit sector’s technology adoption.

A 2022 report found 58% of nonprofits face budget shortfalls, driving them to embrace AI specifically for automating routine tasks while preserving human judgment for mission-critical work 1.

Despite financial pressures, organizations are increasingly recognizing that AI works best when enhancing human capabilities rather than replacing them, with successful implementations focusing on reducing administrative burdens.

The Yale School of Management found only 11% of nonprofits rate their digital strategies as effective, suggesting Wikipedia’s transparent AI implementation could serve as a valuable model for other organizations 2.

This human-centered approach to AI differs significantly from commercial applications, positioning nonprofits as potential leaders in developing ethical technology frameworks that preserve human agency.

2️⃣ Knowledge management evolving from storage to intelligent access

Wikipedia’s strategy reflects a fundamental shift in knowledge management approaches, moving from simply storing information to making it intelligently accessible.
