White House undecided on proposed BTC reserve

The White House is still deciding whether the Treasury Department or the Commerce Department should oversee a proposed US Strategic Bitcoin Reserve, 16 months after President Donald Trump ordered work on the plan.

Trump signed an executive order in March 2025 calling for a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve and a separate US Digital Asset Stockpile.

Administration officials have since reviewed the federal government’s crypto holdings without publicly disclosing the total.

White House crypto adviser Patrick Witt has said congressional action is needed to fully establish and activate the funds, but no related legislation has advanced.

The US is estimated to hold more than 300,000 bitcoin worth about US$21 billion, although it remains unclear whether those assets can be formally placed in the reserve.
