WhatsApp rolls out bill payments in India

Meta is rolling out bill payments on WhatsApp in India, with availability expanding gradually to Android and iOS users over the coming weeks.

Using the Bharat Bill Payment System (BBPS), also known as Bharat Connect, the feature lets users access 22,722 billers across 30 categories, including electricity, gas, water, FASTag, insurance, credit card bills, and loan repayments.

Users can tap the ₹ icon on WhatsApp’s home screen to view past and upcoming bills, manage multiple accounts with one biller, and pay using Unified Payments Interface (UPI), debit cards, or credit cards.

The feature adds a service already common on major Indian payment apps, with Google Pay supporting bill payments, and Amazon offering them in India.

This follows the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) removing WhatsApp Pay’s UPI user cap in India.
