WhatsApp rolls out new anti-scam features
WhatsApp is introducing new features to help users detect scams on its platform.
The Meta-owned app has removed over 6.8 million scam-linked accounts globally.
The updates include a safety overview for group chats, which appears when someone not in your contacts adds you to a group, showing key group information and safety tips.
Notifications from these groups are muted until a user confirms they want to stay.
WhatsApp is also testing warnings in one-on-one chats with unknown contacts to give users more context.
The company reported working with OpenAI to disrupt scams originating from a center in Cambodia, where fraudsters used AI-generated messages to lure victims into cryptocurrency and pyramid schemes.
WhatsApp advises users to verify unusual requests and take time before responding to unfamiliar messages.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Scammers have rapidly evolved from basic tactics to AI-enhanced operations on WhatsApp
WhatsApp scams have become dramatically more sophisticated over the past decade, moving from crude early attempts to AI-powered operations that closely mimic legitimate businesses.
In 2015, scammers used basic pump-and-dump schemes with poorly constructed messages to manipulate stock prices, which users could easily identify as spam1. By 2017, they had progressed to creating fake supermarket voucher offers that directed users to fraudulent websites mimicking legitimate retailers like Asda and Tesco2.
Today’s scams represent a significant leap in sophistication. Recent operations involve cloning entire investment firms and creating fake communications that are nearly indistinguishable from legitimate financial services, resulting in £2.7 million in reported losses3.
The integration of AI tools like ChatGPT has enabled scammers to generate convincing initial contact messages. These operations now use multi-platform approaches, starting conversations on WhatsApp before moving targets to Telegram for more complex cryptocurrency investment schemes.
2️⃣ WhatsApp’s massive user base creates an enforcement challenge despite significant takedown efforts
The platform’s scale makes it an irresistible target for scammers while creating substantial challenges for effective enforcement, even with aggressive countermeasures.
