WhatsApp launches new features to enhance group chats, users

WhatsApp has rolled out updates to enhance group chats and user functionality. A new “Online” indicator shows how many participants are actively using the app.

Users can now manage notifications more effectively with a “Notify for” setting, allowing them to select notifications for replies, mentions, or messages from saved contacts.

Improvements to event management include RSVP options, guest invitations, and the ability to pin events for quick access.

For iPhone users, WhatsApp now includes a document reader, allowing files to be scanned and saved without a separate app. Voice message transcriptions are also available.

Channel admins can record and share short videos and link users to their channels via QR codes.

Video calling has been improved with better reliability and quality, including features like joining ongoing calls directly from chat threads and pinch-to-zoom during live calls.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Messaging apps are converging toward feature parity despite different origins

WhatsApp’s new features highlight a broader industry pattern where messaging platforms increasingly adopt similar capabilities regardless of their original purpose.

Founded in 2009 as a simple status update app, WhatsApp has undergone dramatic evolution—from basic messaging to adding multimedia sharing, then implementing Stories-like status updates in 2017, and now adopting group features similar to those seen on platforms like Discord 1.

This convergence is happening across platforms with fundamentally different origins: WhatsApp began as a personal messaging tool focusing on privacy with end-to-end encryption, while Discord was built for gaming communities with server structures and voice channels 2.

The introduction of online indicators and group reaction features reflects a trend where successful messaging platforms identify common features that drive engagement, regardless of their initial target audience.

Since Facebook’s $19 billion acquisition in 2014, WhatsApp has gradually expanded beyond its original simplicity, often adopting features pioneered elsewhere—like Stories from Snapchat and now community features inspired by platforms like Discord 3.

2️⃣ WhatsApp’s new features reveal tension between connectivity and privacy

The new “Online” indicator for groups exemplifies WhatsApp’s ongoing challenge to balance social connectivity with its privacy-focused brand identity.
