WhatsApp adds parental controls for kids’ messaging

WhatsApp said it is rolling out parent-managed accounts that let parents or guardians set up and control WhatsApp for pre-teens, limiting the account to messaging and calling.

To set up the accounts, WhatsApp said parents or guardians must have the phone they have bought for their family member and their own device side by side to link accounts, after which parents or guardians can decide who may contact the account and which groups it can join.

Parents or guardians can also review message requests from unknown contacts and manage the account’s privacy settings. The new parental controls and settings are gated by a parent PIN on the managed device, and WhatsApp said only parents or guardians can access and change privacy settings.

WhatsApp said all personal conversations remain private and protected with end-to-end encryption, meaning no one – not even WhatsApp – can see or hear them, and it said it will provide additional tools and insights for parents, particularly around groups.

The company said the feature will roll out gradually over the coming months and that it will collect user feedback.
