Western Union to launch USD stablecoin in May 2026

Western Union said on its first-quarter earnings call that it plans to launch a US dollar stablecoin called USDPT in May 2026 for business settlements, aiming to speed up cross-border payments beyond bank rails such as SWIFT.

USDPT will run on Solana and be issued by Anchorage Digital.

The company will first use it with agents rather than consumers. Chief executive Devin McGranahan said the system could cut settlement times from two or three days to near real time.

Western Union also plans a Digital Asset Network for wallet cash-outs and a Stable Card later in 2026, as rivals expand stablecoin payment offerings.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Financial strain pushes Western Union toward stablecoins

  • Western Union is turning to stablecoins as it faces business pressure. Its stock has fallen nearly 50% over the past five years 1.
  • The company also has a growth problem. In the first quarter of 2026, Branded Digital transactions rose 21%, while adjusted revenue from that business grew 6% 2.
  • Executives said the gap came from shifts in where customers send money, growth in lower-revenue corridors, heavier promotions, and more transfers landing in bank accounts. Those trends are pushing Western Union to find new ways to “own the economics” of stablecoin-linked money movement 23.
  • Western Union is also buying digital wallet companies, including Lana in Mexico and Dash, Singtel’s digital wallet business in Singapore, as it builds a wider digital network 2.

Western Union wants to handle crypto cashouts

  • The plan goes beyond internal settlement. Western Union wants to act as a cash off-ramp for digital assets through partnerships with digital wallets and wallet software providers 3.
  • Its Digital Asset Network (DAN) would let crypto wallet users convert digital assets into local currency at more than 360,000 collection points worldwide 4.
  • A planned Stable Card would let consumers hold value in stablecoins and spend anywhere cards are accepted, with an initial rollout set for later in 2026 2.
  • Through partners such as Crossmint, Western Union plans to place its payout options inside wallet and payment application programming interfaces (APIs), which are tools that let different software systems connect. That would weave its cash pickup network into other fintech apps 4.
