WeRide debuts Southeast Asia’s first driverless bus in Singapore

WeRide, a Chinese autonomous vehicle developer, has launched Southeast Asia’s first fully driverless bus service in Singapore.

The Robobus operates on a fixed 1.2-kilometer loop on Sentosa Island, connecting three hotels and The Galleria shopping mall.

It runs every 12 minutes and is equipped with 360-degree vision, allowing it to detect obstacles from over 200 meters away.

The launch follows a year-long trial that began in June 2024, with safety operators onboard. No accidents occurred during the trial.

According to the Land Transport Authority (LTA) of Singapore, companies must pass comprehensive safety assessments before removing onboard safety operators.

Remote monitoring will replace them once the assessment is completed.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Singapore’s strategic regulatory framework is accelerating autonomous vehicle adoption

WeRide’s achievement in launching a fully driverless bus service demonstrates Singapore’s methodical approach to autonomous vehicle regulation.

Singapore’s Land Transport Authority follows a clear staged process, requiring companies to first demonstrate safety with operators onboard before allowing fully driverless operations with remote monitoring.

This structured approval process has helped Singapore rank first among 22 countries in the Autonomous Disruptive Radar assessment by Roland Berger, outperforming other nations in mobility indicators and readiness for autonomous technology deployment 1.

The government created specialized testing infrastructure through the Center of Excellence for Testing & Research of Autonomous Vehicles (CETRAN), which oversees the approval process and maintains stringent safety standards while enabling innovation 1.

This balance of safety and innovation has created an environment where companies can progress from testing to commercial deployment more efficiently than in many other markets.

2️⃣ Singapore has established itself as a global testbed for autonomous vehicle technology

WeRide’s deployment follows a pattern of international autonomous vehicle companies using Singapore as a proving ground, with its compact size (276 square miles) and population density (5.45 million people) creating ideal testing conditions 1.
