🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Digital banks achieve profitability through tech-driven credit risk management
WeLab Bank’s journey highlights how advanced risk management technology enables better performance in a challenging credit environment.
Despite market delinquency rates worsening by 13% YoY, WeLab achieved a 37% improvement in credit performance, demonstrating the competitive advantage of its AI-driven risk assessment.
This success builds on WeLab’s early focus on technology, which enabled loan approvals in seconds rather than days at traditional banks, as well as proprietary fraud detection systems that achieved nearly 0% identity fraud loss 1.
The company’s approach leverages non-traditional data sources from smartphones to predict creditworthiness, allowing WeLab to reach borrowers without prior credit history 1.
This technology foundation helps explain how WeLab reached profitability in just four years, faster than the industry benchmark of 5-7 years for digital banks, suggesting that sophisticated risk technology is a key differentiator in the digital banking landscape.
2️⃣ Revenue diversification beyond lending emerges as critical for digital bank sustainability
WeLab Bank’s profitability milestone reveals a strategic shift that many digital banks are implementing: expanding beyond their initial core lending products.
While maintaining leadership in unsecured lending with 11% market share in Hong Kong, WeLab has aggressively diversified into wealth management, growing assets under management by nearly 300% year-over-year.
