WeChat mini games grow 55% in activity and 40% in revenue

WeChat’s PC mini game platform recorded a 55% increase in user activity over the past year, underscoring the super app’s expanding footprint in the gaming sector.

The data was shared at the 2025 WeChat Mini Game Developer Conference, held this week in Chongqing. The WeChat team said seamless switching between mobile and PC has deepened user engagement, driving both growth and monetization.

Commercial revenue from PC-based mini games climbed 40% year on year, while paid user acquisition campaigns grew threefold, according to the company.

WeChat’s short video and livestreaming feature, Channels (known as 视频号 in Chinese), is also boosting the visibility of mini games. Livestream watch time for these games jumped 54%, and short video views rose 22% over the same period.

WeChat, owned by Chinese tech giant Tencent, first introduced its mini game platform in 2017. The ecosystem allows developers to create lightweight games that run directly within the app, without requiring downloads.

The platform has attracted widespread industry participation, with 70% of publicly listed gaming firms now involved, the company said. Nearly 70 mini games have surpassed 1 million daily active users, while more than 300 titles generated over 10 million yuan (US$1.38 million) in quarterly revenue.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Mini games represent a strategic growth sector in the broader gaming ecosystem

WeChat’s 55% growth in PC mini games reflects a broader industry pattern where mini games are evolving from supplementary features to central revenue drivers.

The global mobile gaming market has shown remarkable growth, expanding from $12.7 billion in 2012 to projections of $106 billion by 2021—a 730% increase—demonstrating the economic potential of accessible gaming formats 1.

This trend extends beyond WeChat, with the hyper-casual gaming boom emphasizing simple mechanics and short play times that attract broader audiences, similar to WeChat’s lightweight, no-download approach 2.

Mini games’ appeal comes from their accessibility and rapid development cycles, making them attractive for both users seeking quick entertainment and publishers looking to expand their portfolios efficiently 3.

The revenue statistics (300+ WeChat mini games generating over $1.38 million quarterly) align with industry observations that mini games can drive significant business growth despite their smaller format.

2️⃣ Cross-platform integration is becoming essential for maximizing user engagement

WeChat’s success with seamless PC-mobile switching represents a critical evolution in how gaming platforms retain users across multiple devices.
