Weak won lifts earnings outlook for Korean game firms
South Korean game companies are benefiting from the won’s slide. The currency closed at 1,519.8 won (US$1) per US$1 on June 12. It has remained in the 1,500-won range for 20 trading days. That lifted the won value of overseas sales and foreign-currency assets.
The move is unusual. The 1,500-won level has surpassed levels seen during the global financial crisis. The currency recently touched its weakest point since 2009.
Krafton said in its first-quarter report that a 5% rise in the won-dollar rate would add about 61.3 billion won (US$40.5 million) to net profit.
Pearl Abyss, a South Korean game developer, said the same move would raise pretax comprehensive income by 23.2 billion won (US$15.3 million).
The companies have large overseas exposure. Games generated US$8.503 billion of South Korea’s content exports in 2024, or 60.4% of the total.
