Waymo to expand robotaxi into Minneapolis, New Orleans

Waymo, Alphabet’s autonomous ride-hailing arm, will expand its robotaxi operations to Minneapolis, Tampa, and New Orleans in the coming days.

The company will start in these cities with human-driven vehicles, using a step-by-step process that begins with mapping and data collection before moving to supervised autonomous testing, and eventually fully driverless rides.

Waymo operates over 1,500 vehicles, and remains the only company in the US currently offering paid robotaxi rides without safety drivers or in-vehicle attendants.

The company began running fully autonomous vehicles in Miami this week, and plans to launch employee operations in Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, and Orlando before opening to the public in 2026.

Waymo faces competition from Tesla, Amazon’s Zoox, and other players investing in self-driving technology, as safety, performance, and regulatory cooperation become key industry challenges.
